Litchford Receives Certificate of Recognition From The Tennessee Supreme Court

Founding member Mark W. Litchford has been recognized by the Tennessee Supreme Court as a 2019 Attorney For Justice.  In an effort to increase the number of attorneys and law offices providing pro bono services to those who cannot afford legal costs, the Tennessee Supreme Court has an extensive recognition program and this year marks the sixth year that the Tennessee Supreme Court has recognized Attorneys for Justice.  To be considered for the program, all service must have been provided under the provisions of Rule 6.1 of the Tennessee Rules of Professional Responsibility, which includes delivery of a substantial portion of legal services without fee or expectation of fee and delivery of legal services at no fee or at a substantially reduced fee to recognized groups and individuals.

This achievement is presented as a result of Litchford's willingness to provide fifty or more hours of pro bono service in Tennessee during the previous calendar year.  Litchford's dedication to the service of underprivileged members in the community reflects the guiding values of Litchford, Pearce & Associates, PLLC, and further advances the firm's mission to provide high-quality and comprehensive legal services for everyone.

The Tennessee Supreme Court's recognition is particularly meaningful to Litchford because his  pro bono services related primarily to helping an underprivileged widow restore ownership in her personal residence after a back-tax sale was improperly conducted without due process notice in 2015.  Litchford handled the case to its ultimate positive result, which required successfully arguing before the Tennessee Court of Appeals to overturn the back-tax sale.  Owens v. Hamilton County, et al., No. E2017-02395-COA-R3-CV, 2018 WL 6253818 (Tenn. Ct. App. November 28, 2018).

“There is no doubt I am very proud and humbled by this recognition because we have a client that could not afford legal services that was faced with losing her residence – perhaps her most prized tangible possession – and together we were able to restore her ownership just before the Christmas holiday season,” said Litchford.  “That is why we practice law.  But to be fair, it took a lot of people, not just me, to achieve the result and I am forever grateful.”

Join Litchford, Pearce & Associates, PLLC, as we congratulate Litchford on this achievement.  The Firm is proud to support all of its attorneys' pro bono efforts and hopes that it can continue to be a steward to providing awareness of equal justice for all.
